Victoria Highlanders begin quest for first PDL league title against Cascadia rival Whitecaps FC

January 31, 2014, VICTORIA (ISN) – The quest for the first Premier Development League title in team history begins again as Victoria Highlanders FC kick off the 2014 PDL season against Whitecaps FC in a Salish Sea Derby, season-opening match at Royal Athletic Park, May 4, at 2:00 p.m.

Coming off their most successful campaign in history, the 2013 Western Conference Champions will be looking to kick-off their season with a victory on home turf. The match is the first of seven at home in the 14-game PDL regular season. This season’s schedule also features a more balanced approach than last year’s front-heavy home schedule, something that was important for the Highlanders front office.

“It’s obviously a lot more balanced than it was last year for us,” said Highlanders General Manager Mark deFrias. “It was something we took a look at this offseason as an organization and something that was a key priority for us to change, not only for our team, but our fans as well.”

DeFrias recognizes the excitement the Whitecaps rivalry brings to Victoria, and wanted to make sure the season kicked off with a bang against a well-known opponent at home.

“The home-opener against the Whitecaps is definitely a date to circle for sports fans in Victoria,” said deFrias. “With the excitement that was built during our playoff run last season, we wanted to make sure it carried over to this season. It should make for an exciting and entertaining home opener.”

The Highlanders will face expansion cousin Kitsap Pumas SC less than two weeks later at Royal Athletic Park before heading to Vancouver for an early season rematch.

The Highlanders will be in unfamiliar territory in Eugene, Oregon, when they travel to face Lane United FC for the first time. Fans will get to see the 2014 expansion squad in Victoria two weeks later, as Victoria plays host July 11.

PDL playoffs begin July 20 with division play-in matches, followed by the Western Conference Final Four on July 26. The Highlanders will be aiming for a return to the PDL Final Four that begin Aug. 2.

Season tickets are on sale now, and can be purchased for only $80, and include a special exhibition friendly to be announced shortly. For more information on schedules, upcoming signings and exciting exhibition matches during the season, please visit
