February 1, 2014, SALMON ARM, BC (ISN) – Saturday was another game of missed opportunities for the Penticton Vees, as the Salmon Arm Silverbacks scored a 4-1 win at the Shaw Centre, and sweep the weekend home-and-home series.
The Vees have still yet to beat the Silverbacks this season, as Saturday was their fifth loss in as many games against Salmon Arm.
Saturday started out well, as Cody DePourcq staked the Vees out to an early lead a minute and a half into the first period. DePourcq took a pass from behind net from Riley Alferd, and slid a knuckler underneath the pad of Angus Redmond at 1:29.
However, the Vees came up empty on three power-play opportunities after going up 1-0, and it came back to bite them in the fleeting moments of the opening frame.
After Salmon Arm forced a turnover inside the Vees zone, Bryden Marsh found an open Blake Box at the right-circle, and the Silverbacks Captain wired a wrist-shot underneath Hunter Miska’s glove at 19:46.
The score remained unchanged until the latter half of the second, when the Silverbacks rallied for three goals in just over six-minutes. Thomas Plese put Salmon Arm out ahead, when he cleaned up a rebound in the Vees crease. Brendan Kennedy had his point shot stopped but Plese quickly batted in the rebound at 13:53.
Two minutes later Brett Fagerheim picked up his first of the season, when he ripped a one-timer from the right-circle, on a nice setup by Landon Smith at 16:06. Smith then turned from playmaker to goal-scorer, as he capped off the scoring inside the final minute of the second. Smith pounced on a missed shot that caromed off the end boards and right to him at the side of the net; Smith picking up his league-leading 40th at 19:21.
Final Score: 4-1 Salmon Arm
Shots: 39-31 Vees
Power-Plays: Vees 0-6 Salmon Arm 0-6
Three Stars: 1) Angus Redmond 2) Bryden Marsh 3) Andrew Farny
The Vees record drops to 29-13-2-4 with the setback and their road record slides to 14-8-1-2. The Vees are now 0-4-0-1 against Salmon Arm this season and face the Silverbacks once again, on Friday, February 7th back at the SOEC. Shane McColgan had his four game point streak come to an end in the loss. Saturday marks the fourth time in their last six games, the Vees were held to two or less goals.
The Vees return to the SOEC on Wednesday, February 5th, when they entertain the Trail Smoke Eaters. It’s the final “Wicked Wednesday” of the season, as tickets are just $5, beer is $2.50 and the Vees in partnership with the Penticton Speedway, will be raffling off a 2001 Honda Civic 4-door for just $2. Fans can get their tickets at the Valley First box office (at the SOEC) starting Monday.
