February 3, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – The Victoria Royals will welcome Calgary to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre for a two-game set in the Hitmen’s only regular season visit to Vancouver Island this week. The puck will drop on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
Wednesday night will be the first Country Night at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre and will also see a unique ticket offer for fans. Any fan wearing their cowboy boots or hat will receive a $4 discount at the Select Your Tickets box office windows for Wednesday’s game!
The Calgary Hitmen (32-14-3-3) are the Eastern Conference’s third place team at the moment, trailing the Edmonton Oil Kings by five points for the conference lead. The Hitmen, like the Royals, were ranked as an honourable mention in last week’s BMO CHL Top 10 list. Calgary has been struggling of late, however. After reeling off seven straight wins, the Hitmen have won just three times in their past 10 outings. Despite their recent woes, Calgary will be a good test for the Royals and boasts a number of exciting players to watch. Jake Virtanen is a highly-touted prospect for the upcoming 2014 NHL Draft and has been a consistent threat for Calgary this season with 50 points (32g-18a) in 51 games played. The Hitmen also recently added Adam Tambellini to the fold after the forward chose to leave the University of North Dakota in favour of the WHL. Tambellini, a 2013 third round pick of the New York Rangers, has picked up 13 points (4g-9a) for Calgary in his first 11 games with the club.
The Royals (34-16-0-3) responded to having a three-game win streak snapped by Vancouver on Friday with an overtime win the following night when they hosted the Giants in the club’s annual Pink in the Rink game. Returning to game action last weekend for Victoria was 2014 NHL Draft prospect Joe Hicketts who made an immediate impact with a pair of assists on Friday and the overtime winner on Saturday. Brandon Magee had a five-game goal streak snapped on Saturday night, but continues to lead the charge for the Royals with 48 points (19g-29a) on the campaign. Goaltender Coleman Vollrath picked up his 14th win of the season on Saturday and still leads the WHL with a 1.92 goals against average and a .941 save percentage.
