February 5, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team will get their first taste of tournament action this year when they head to San Diego, Calif. to compete as one of 20 teams in the Super San Diego Women’s Golf Championships, February 10-11 at River Walk Golf Course.
The women last saw action when they travelled to Hilo, HI., placing sixth at the Dennis Rose Invitational amidst windy course conditions.
Travelling to the San Diego tournament will be fourth-year captain Brynn Tomie. The winner of the 2013 Vikes Golf Shootout, Tomie was also the Vikes top-performer in the opening half of the season, shooting the lowest scores in three of the Vikes five tournaments. Teammate Cari Chow will join Tomie on this weekend’s trip as the second of interim head coach Justin Clew’s two coaches’ picks.
Chow was the only Vike to shoot lower scores than Tomie in the Vikes opening half of the 2013-14 season, posting the lowest scores at the Cavalier Invitational as well as the year-ending Dennis Rose Invitational. Earning their ticket to California through qualifying rounds of play were Vikes Michaela Abey, Emily Nicol and Laura Ferreira.
Players who qualify for tournaments under Clews’ system earn their spot based purely on results, while coaches’ picks allow the Vikes head coach some leeway in determining which players he feels have played well enough to earn a spot.
“We’ve got 18 holes to play on Monday, and 18 holes to play on Tuesday,” said Clews. “I anticipate for us to finish among the top-5 teams in the tournament.”
Competition at the Super San Diego Women’s Golf Championships tees off Feb. 10 at the River Walk Golf Course in San Diego, Calif. with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. The tournament wraps up Feb.11. Results will be available at plnusealions.com
