Seton Hall Baseball picked second in preseason poll

February 6, 2014, NEW YORK, N.Y. (ISN) – The Seton Hall baseball team has been selected to finish second in the BIG EAST Baseball Preseason Coaches’ Poll as announced by the conference office on Thursday. The Pirates placed just one point behind Creighton for the top spot.

Junior Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) and seniors Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) and Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) were all named to the 2014 Preseason All-Conference Team. Prevost was a unanimous selection.

The ranking and all-conference selections were made by a vote of the seven BIG EAST coaches. Creighton, Seton Hall and St. John’s were the only schools to receive first-place votes. St. John’s received the most first-place votes (three), despite placing third in the overall poll. Creighton and Seton Hall received two first-place votes apiece.

Since winning the 2011 BIG EAST Championship, Seton Hall has regularly out-played its preseason ranking. In 2012, the Pirates were picked to finish fifth and placed third. Last season, the Hall was picked to finish sixth and tied for second place.

Annunziata is the lone returnee of six All-Conference selections from 2013. The Third Team pick was also a First Team All-NJCBA selection and led Seton Hall with six home runs. The slugging first baseman batted .319 in 52 games last season with 38 RBIs and committed just three errors in 544 chances in the field.

Prevost took a major step forward as a regular starter in 2013. A Second Team All-NJCBA selection, the 6-foot-8 right-hander compiled a 5-2 record with a career-best 3.24 ERA. With standouts Jon Prosinski and Greg Terhune having graduated, Prevost will be looked upon to anchor the Pirates’ rotation in 2014. He is one of only four unanimous selections to the preseason team this year.

Selden was also named to the All-NJCBA Second Team last season. A versatile defender, he saw action at both third base and the outfield. A regular in the Seton Hall lineup, Selden batted a career-best .320 in 51 games with two home runs, 33 RBIs and 17 stolen bases.

Creighton nabbed both the Preseason Player of the Year, Mike Gerber, and the Preseason Pitcher of the Year, Tommy Strunc. The Bluejays also landed four players on the Preseason All-Conference Team.

Seton Hall will begin the 2014 campaign on Friday, February 14 for the first of three games at the University of Oklahoma. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET.
