February 8, 2014, Winnipeg (ISN) – The No 5 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies picked up a weekend split after a 74-57 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Satuday evening at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.
Winnipeg pulled a major upset in Friday’s contest beating the Huskies by a margin of 72-67.
Saskatchewan with the victory improves their record to 17-3. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 11-9.
Kiera Lyons led the way for the Huskies finishing with a double-double consisting of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Kelsey Trulsrud and Jordyn Halvorson each added 11.
Fourth year guard Stephanie Kleysen led the Wesmen with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Megan Noonan was next with 15 points.
Winnipeg started the contest riding the momentum from last night’s victory, building a 17-14 lead after the opening quarter. The Huskies turned it up in the second quarter outscoring Winnipeg 20-10 to take a 34-27 lead into the halftime break.
The Huskies extended their lead to double digits in the third quarter outscoring the Wesmen 21-10 to take a commanding 55-37 lead into the fourth quarter. Winnipeg was unable to put a dent into the large Huskies lead in the fourth quarter as Saskatchewan went home with the 74-57 victory.
Saskatchewan drained six-three pointers in the contest and held the Wesmen to only four-three’s in this game. Winnipeg was deadly last night connecting for 11 three-pointers. The Huskies had the advantage on the boards out rebounding the Wesmen by a margin of 52-37.
Saskatchewan will wrap up their regular season schedule in Edmonton next weekend against the Alberta Pandas. Winnipeg will close out the regular season with a home and home series against Manitoba.
