February 10, 2014 (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team opened up the 2014 calendar year at the Super San Diego Women’s Golf Championships, February 10 at River Walk Golf Course in San Diego, Calif.
Third-year Vike Michaela Abey led the Vikes in their first day of the two round tournament, posting a score of 77, 5-over.
Fourth-year captain Brynn Tomie finished second on the day in scoring for the Vikes with an 83, 11-over round while third-year teammate Cari Chow rounded out the Vikes top-3 scorers with an 85, 13-over score through the first round. Vikes Laura Ferreira and Emily Nicol rounded out the Vikes roster with scores of 88, 16-over and 89, 17-over, respectfully.
“I’m very pleased with Michaela’s first round score of 77,” said Vikes interim head coach Justin Clews. “Most of the girls finished strongly and showed a string of good holes. Our goal tomorrow is to crack 320 as a team.”
The Vikes shot a first round team score of 333, placing them in ninth among the tournament’s 17 teams. Point Loma led all schools with a first round score of 308, 20-over. CBU’s Mari Monsaive, Point Loma’s Mariah Fuller and Lady Flames’ Courtney Shelton all shot 75, 3-over rounds to finish in a tie for first-place after 18 holes.
The Vikes will enter their final round of competition at the Super San Diego Women’s Golf Championships, Feb. 11 at River Walk Golf Course.
