February 11, 2014, EDISON, NJ (ISN) – The Iona College lacrosse team was tabbed fifth in the 2014 MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll, the league announced today. Additionally, senior defender Angela Grous and sophomore attack Mary Kate McCormick were named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team.
Canisius was selected as the favorite to win its fourth consecutive title in 2014. Marist finished second in the poll with 67 points. Fairfield was just behind them with 64 points for third in the poll. Monmouth finished in fourth receiving 57 votes, while the Gaels rounded out the top five with 38 points. Siena received 36 points, good for sixth, and Quinnipiac picked up 32 votes for seventh. Niagara finished in eight with 17, and Manhattan received 15 votes to round out the standings.
Grous anchored an Iona defense that caused 6.8 turnovers per game a season ago to earn All-MAAC First Team recognition. While only playing 12 of 16 games last season, Grous tied for a team-high 14 caused turnovers, was second in draw controls with 38 and snatched up picked up 21 ground balls. She also picked up two goals.
McCormick started all 16 games for the Gaels in her freshman campaign earning MAAC Rookie of the Year, All-MAAC Team and All-Rookie Team honors. She finished second on the Gaels with 20 goals and ranked seventh in the MAAC with 13 assists. McCormick led the team in draw controls with 40 and caused turnovers with 14 in 2013.
The Gaels begin 2014 action with a quad-team exhibition Saturday at Mazzella Field before the first regular season contest Feb. 22 at Brown.
