February 13, 2014, Calgary, AB (ISN) – The 2013-14 WHL regular season enters its second weekend of play in February with 28 games on the schedule for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Family Day Monday in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

AROUND THE RINKS…

  • In Calgary, AB, the Hitmen invite fans for a Family Day Skate on Monday at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
  • In Edmonton, AB, the Oil Kings will hit the ice for some Pond Hockey on Saturday in Leduc, AB.  Joining the Oil Kings will be a pair of Atom hockey teams, who will be put through some drills to help improve their skills in addition to a good old fashioned game of shinny.
  • In Everett, WA, the Silvertips will be a big draw on Valentine’s Day with their Valentine’s Cheapskate Date Night promotion. 
  • In Lethbridge, AB, Hurricanes fans will be treated to some live music at Friday’s contest versus the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.
  • In Medicine Hat, AB, the fans can enter a raffle to get their hands on an autographed jersey of The Great One when the Tigers host the Warriors on Saturday night.
  • In Prince Albert, SK, the Raiders will be sporting Special Jerseys on Saturday night when the Victoria Royals come to town.  The jerseys celebrate the 2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games, to be held in Prince Albert later in the month.
  • In Swift Current, SK, the Broncos celebrate Valentine’s Day with their Honka Honka Burnin’ Love promotion.
  • In Vancouver, B.C., the Giants celebrate one of the most popular players in franchise history when they induce Brendan Gallagher to their Ring of Honor at Saturday’s contest versus the Portland Winterhawks.

31 WHL GRADS COMPETE IN SOCHI OLYMPIC MEN’S HOCKEY…

Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League is proud to announce that 31 WHL graduates will participate in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games men’s hockey tournament in Sochi, Russia in February.

The Olympic men’s hockey tournament includes 12 national teams.  Nine of those 12 teams boast at least one WHL graduate on the roster.

Canada, the defending Olympic Gold medalist, leads the way with eight WHL graduates included on the rosters, including Ryan Getzlaf, Duncan Keith and Shea Weber, who all took home a Gold medal from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, B.C.

WHL PRESENTS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD TO COATES…

Calgary, AB – Ron Robison, Commissioner of the Western Hockey League, announced, on behalf of the WHL Board of Governors, that former Kamloops Blazers Director and Alternate Governor Dennis Coates is a recipient of the WHL Distinguished Service Award for the 2013 – 14 season.

FORMER TIGER RINGROSE CANADA WEST WHL GRAD OF THE MONTH…

EDMONTON – Canada West Universities Athletic Association and the Western Hockey League proudly announce that former Medicine Hat Tigers forward Sean Ringrose from the University of Alberta Golden Bears is WHL men’s hockey Graduate of the Month for January.

This marks the first time an Alberta Golden Bears student-athlete has won the honour since goaltender Kurtis Mucha claimed the honour in February 2013.

A two-year member of the WHL, Ringrose becomes the 37th monthly winner for the Golden Bears whose student-athletes have won the award more than any other conference school.

TRAVELODGE FAN FACEOFF WINNERS ANNOUNCED…

Travelodge Canada is pleased to announce the names of the two grand prize winners of the Travelodge Canada Fan Faceoff contest.  Each of our winners has won a trip for four people to the 2014 MasterCard Memorial Cup in London, Ontario (May 24 – 26, 2014).

Sharon Dutchak, from the WHL, was the winning fan from all entries received supporting the Medicine Hat Tigers and Bryan Connors-Jawenashi, from the OHL, was the lucky fans chosen from all of the entries supporting the Sudbury Wolves.

KEY WEEKEND MATCH-UP…
Swift Current Broncos @ Regina Pats
Saturday, February 15th    

Dyson Stevenson and the Regina Pats take on Julius Honka and the Swift Current Broncos for a battle between East Division contenders on Saturday night in Regina, SK.

The Pats edged out the visiting Kootenay Ice 3-2 on Wednesday for their fifth victory over their last seven games, and currently sit just one point behind the Broncos for first place in the East Division.  The Pats have outscored their opponents 30-15 over their last seven outings.  Stevenson has scored four game-winning goals this season.

The Broncos blanked the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings 3-0 on Sunday for their second straight victory, and currently hold down the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference as East Division leaders.  The Broncos have played one more game than the Pats.  Honka has racked up eight points in three games versus Regina this season.

It’s the fourth meeting of the season between the Broncos and Pats.  The Broncos won all three previous meetings this season, allowing just five goals in the process.

The Pats are in Prince Albert and the Broncos host Medicine Hat on Friday night prior to Saturday’s head-to-head fixture.

FRIDAY NIGHT WHL HOCKEY ON SHAW & ROOT SPORTS…

Cole Ully and the Kamloops Blazers welcome Nic Petan and the Portland Winterhawks for a Valentine’s Day tilt, live on SHAW and ROOT SPORTS (7:00pm PST).

The Blazers are mired in a 10-game losing skid, most recently falling 2-1 to the visiting Tri-City Americans on Monday, and currently sit in 10th place in the Western Conference.  The Blazers are 6-22-2-2 at home this season.  Ully boasts a team-leading 24 goals and 52 points.

The Winterhawks ran their winning streak to 14 games with a 6-4 victory in Prince George on Wednesday, clinching a playoff spot in the process.  Wednesday’s victory means the Hawks will finish with 40 or more wins for the fifth straight season.  Petan netted a goal and two assists on Wednesday, moving him into the WHL scoring lead with 95 points.

It’s the third of four meetings this season between the Winterhawks and Blazers.  Portland took the first two encounters, scoring seven goals in each contest.
