Spartans end season with battle against Cascades

February 15, 2014, ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia (ISN) – The Trinity Western Spartans were defeated 55-39 by the No. 7 Fraser Valley Cascades in the final Canada West conference game of the season Saturday night at UFV in Abbotsford, B.C.

The win allows the Cascades to finish conference play at 17-5, while the loss ends the Spartans season at 5-17.

“This season has been a battle start to finish but I’m proud of how hard we worked. We talked about ending the season as a better defensive group and I think we had moments of that tonight,” commented TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul. “We wish Janelle and Holly the best and thank them for their leadership throughout this entire season.”

Forward Laurissa Weigl (Stony Plain, Alta.) with 12 points and five rebounds and guard Chantelle Martin (Surrey, B.C.) with 11 points and three rebounds led the Spartans, while forward Nataliia Gavryliuk with 17 points and eight rebounds, forward Sarah Wierks with 12 points and seven rebounds and forward Nicole Wierks with 10 rebounds and nine points led the Cascades.

The Spartans had a strong defensive first half of the game as the held the Cascades to 18.2 percent (6-33) shooting, while TWU shot 24.1 percent (7-29). Fraser Valley was able to take a three point, 22-19 lead into the half time break thanks to going 10-12 from the foul line.

Fraser Valley came charging out of the gate in the second half and used a 16-0 run to break the game open and lead 38-19 with 2:40 remaining in the third quarter. At the end of 30 minutes UFV would hold onto a 45-26 lead.

The Spartan outscored the Cascades in the fourth quarter 13-10, but were unable to catch UFV as Fraser Valley earned the 55-39 victory.

Tonight’s contest was the final game of the season for TWU, while UFV will head into Canada West play-offs next week when they will host the University of Calgary beginning February 27 at 7 p.m.

Game Notes: UFV had the rebounding edge at 48-31…the Spartans finished at 20.3 percent (12-59) from the field while the Cascades finished at 26.9 percent (18-67)…tonight’s game was the final game as a Spartan for fifth year guard Janelle Traber (Abbotsford, B.C.)…TWU fifth year forward Holly Strom (Calgary) did not play due to injury…
