February 16, 2014 (ISN) – New Zealand claimed the second round of the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series 2013/14 after beating Canada in the final in Atlanta on Sunday.

After tasting defeat in the final of the last round in Dubai, New Zealand got back to winning ways in the States, claiming the second round of the series in style.

Sean Horan’s girls swept Canada aside on the final match of day two at Kennesaw State University.

The girls in black beat Japan and Russia on their way to the final, where they kept Canada scoreless, winning 36-0.

Australia, who won the opening round of the series in Dubai last November, claimed third spot in the tournament when they defeated Russia.

The Plate final was won by USA after an exciting encounter against Spain, while Netherlands claimed the Bowl with a defeat of China.

New Zealand’s Sarah Goss was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the #Atlanta7s tournament, although USA rookie Jessica Javelette hit the headlines on native soil after she scored seven tries – only five weeks after taking up Rugby as a sport.

Speaking after the game to IRB.com, coach New Zealand coach Sean Horan was delighted with the win.

“The way the girls performed was pretty outstanding. We’re building, we’re getting better and we still believe in ourselves, in fact we probably focus more on ourselves than others.”

“It’s about getting the body and the mind right. You want to peak on the second day of the tournament and that’s what we did. I’m happy with our performance.”

But there won’t be too much celebrating for any of the winners in Atlanta – eleven of the twelve sides now travel on to Sao Paulo in Brazil for Round 3 of the Series, which kicks off on Friday, February 21.

The draw for the next round in Brazil will be announced on Monday.

Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Russia, Spain and USA are core teams on the 2013/14 IRB Women’s Sevens World Series after reaching the quarter-finals of Rugby World Cup Sevens 2013. The eight core teams compete across all rounds of the Series.
