Almost 23.5 million Canadians watched CBC’s Olympic Winter Games coverage on Feb 16

February 18, 2014 (ISN) – CBC/Radio-Canada promised to deliver Canadians the most engaging and comprehensive Olympic Winter Games coverage, and we’re fulfilling that promise as record audiences tune in.

Day 9 (Sunday, February 16) was no exception as an average audience of more than 5.1 million viewers tuned in for Olympic Daytime across all platforms.

The Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey game between Canada and Finland contributed to the record audience, along with the Figure Skating Ice Dance Short Program. Twelve million Canadians tuned in live to watch Canada beat Finland 2-1 in OT, while 4.7 million Canadians watched the Ice Dance Short Program live. In total, almost 23.5 million Canadians tuned in on Day 9, more than any other day of the Olympics so far.

Day 9 (Sunday, February 16)

  • As it stands, 32 million Canadians (92 per cent of the population) have tuned in to any Olympic content on either a French or English platform since Feb. 6, an increase of about 400,000 people over Day 8 (Saturday, Feb. 15).
  • Olympic Daytime on Day 9 posted an audience 73 per cent higher than the program average so far. The second ranked Olympic Daytime block occurred on Day 2 (Sunday, Feb. 9) with a combined audience of just under 3.9 million.
  • Three-quarters of all the English TV audience tuning in from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. ET was to Olympic Daytime (on either CBC or its subsidiaries), with a combined share of 75 per cent of the audience.
  • The peak minute during the Men’s Ice Hockey game was at 2:16 p.m. ET, with a 2+ audience of 7.659 million viewers watching during the final minutes of the game.
  • The peak minute during the Figure Skating Ice Dance Short Program was at 1:41 p.m. ET when the scores were announced for American competitors Meryl Davis and Charlie White with a 2+ audience of 1.771 million.

Day 8 (Saturday, February 15)

  • Day 8 marks the highest reported audience for Olympic Morning, due mainly to high audiences for the USA vs. Russia Men’s Ice Hockey game which aired on CBC (7:40 – 10:30 a.m. ET).
  • With a total audience of 1.543 million viewers (CBC + subsidiaries), Olympic Morning posted its highest audiences on Day 8, 42 per cent higher than the average for Olympic Morning so far (1.085 million viewers).
  • 7.2 million Canadians tuned in to watch the USA beat Russia 3-2 in the eighth round of the shootout.
  • The peak minute of the day on CBC was during the Men’s Ice Hockey game at 10:16 a.m. ET, with a 2+ audience of 3.760 million during the fourth round of the shootout.
  • With a total share of 46 per cent, about half of all the English TV audience tuning in from 7:40-10:30 a.m. ET was to the Men’s Ice Hockey game.
