February 18, 2014 (ISN) – Volleyball Canada is pleased to announce the beach volleyball teams that will represent Canada at the FIVB U17 World Championships held in Bahia de Banderas, Mexico, July 15 to 20, 2014.
The winner of the men’s category was the team of Parvir Jhajj (Mississauga, ON) and Sharone Vernon-Evans (Scarborough, ON). They beat Jordan Pereira (St. Catharines, ON) and Taryq Sani (Markham, ON) 21-14, 21-9.
“We are very proud to represent Canada, our club (Pakmen Volleyball Club) and our families in Mexico,” said Vernon-Evans.
In the bronze medal position was the team of Nick Trewern (Aurora, ON) and Mitchell Law-Heese (Aurora, ON) who beat Jordan Figueira (Oakville, ON) and Andrew Smondulak (Mississauga, ON) 2-16, 21-17.
Teams from British Columbia dominated the women’s finals: Natalie Livingston (Kelowna, BC) and Quinci Birker (Kelowna, BC) beat Jane Kepler and Sophia Stone, both of Surrey, BC. 21-10, 19-21, 15-10.
“We haven’t played together in a while, so it was a bit difficult to get back in the groove, but we are happy with the result and are looking forward to Mexico,” said Birker.
Annette Kowara (Toronto, ON) and Tristan Peterson (Caledon, ON) won the bronze-medal match over Ashley Klassen (Tsawwassen, BC) and Bianca Te (Burnaby, BC) 22-24, 21-12, 16-14.
The selection tournament took place at the National Beach Volleyball training centre in Toronto.
