February 22, 2014, Mission (ISN) – After Saturday’s BC Winter Games action in Mission (and surrounding communities), it appears to be a two-horse race for top spot in the medal standings.
Fraser Valley (Zone 3), the leader as of Friday evening, was passed by the Lower Mainland (Zone 4) on the second full day of competition. The Lower Mainland has racked up 479 medals (239 gold, 134 silver, 106 bronze), while the Fraser Valley sits at 421. Vancouver Island North (231 medals) is a distant third.
Some of the highlights from Saturday:
- A quartet of divers became double gold medalists. Alison Komlos of North Vancouver, Nick Nepomuceno of North Vancouver, William Robertson of Saanich and Tavia Waiz of White Rock emerged victorious at Walnut Grove Pool on Saturday, adding to their medal haul from Friday.
- Heavy snowfall at Hemlock saw the alpine skiing events cancelled, but the slopestyle freestyle event went ahead. Hannah Benischek (senior women), Erin Sketchley (junior ladies), Matt Finlayson (senior men) and Lucas Pelletier (junior men) gold medals.
- Karate was the only one of the 18 BC Winter Games sports which didn’t begin until Saturday. The event got underway in Pitt Meadows, with semifinalists determined in the kata competition. Medals will be handed out on Sunday.
