February 22, 2014, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – The Ooks badminton squad will have home court advantage when NAIT hosts the 2014 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Badminton National Championships from Feb. 26 to March 1. This is the fifth time NAIT has hosted the championships.
Six NAIT student-athletes will compete in the national championships, after recently winning four of five events at the 2014 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC)
nationals qualifying tournament.
Badminton coach Jordan Richey says the challenge for the team will be overcoming the day-to-day distractions associated with playing in a national championship at home.
These simple distractions – like school, friends and family life – are less of an issue when playing away.
“To be successful at this year’s championships our team will have to focus like never before,” said Richey. “We’re counting in strong support from the home crowd to help us meet our goal of winning gold.”
The Ooks are coming off a strong regular season where they finished first in the ACAC standings. The six athletes who qualified for the nationals are:
- Lei Chen (men’s singles)
- Yang Sun (women’s singles)
- Andy Ko/Jake Perry (men’s doubles)
- Powin Lau/Jessica Yu (women’s doubles)
“Hosting the CCAA National Badminton Championships is always a pleasure,” said Gregg
Meropoulis, NAIT Athletics manager. “Playing host the best college badminton
players from across Canada offers us the opportunity to promote the sport and NAIT’s
role as a leader in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association. I look forward to
some outstanding competition in the spirit of sport.”
