February 23, 2014, Victoria, BC (ISN) – On a Sunday morning at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the South Island Royals welcomed the North Island Silvertips for the second game of a two-game home-and-home set.
The Royals gave Chris Smith the start in net, while the Silvertips responded with John Hawthorne.
South Island had the best scoring chance of the early minutes as forward Kayden Peck rang a shot off the right post on a two-on-one break at the five minute mark of the first period. North Island then looked to grab the first goal of the contest at the halfway mark as Mathieu Jallabert burst in on a partial shorthanded breakaway, but was denied by the blocker of Smith. The teams skated four-on-four to conclude the opening frame, but neither could find the breakthrough as they headed into the first intermission scoreless.
The Silvertips opened the scoring on a powerplay tally just over a minute into the second stanza. From the right circle, Joe Gage corralled a rebound from Carter Turnbull’s point shot and quickly fired it past the outstretched pad of Smith as the scoreboard read 1-0. North Island stretched their lead to two just over three minutes later as Joe Surgenor finished off Grady McInnes’s cross-crease pass. McInnes added the Silvertips third goal just before the 10 minute mark as McInnes snipped a shot over the glove of Smith from the left face-off circle. Markus Daly entered the Royals’ net after the third goal. Not even a minute later South Island found their first as Ethan Waitzner showed some slick hands in front of goal, finishing off a deke high to the glove of Hawthorne. The second period scoring barrage continued as Jallabert, Coleman Doney, Devyn Grant and Hunter Findlater added four more goals for North Island as they took a commanding 7-1 lead into the final period.
The Royals scored their second goal of the game at the 10:35 mark of the third frame as Parker Ellis pounced on a loose rebound in the crease on the man advantage. Turnbull added an eighth marker for the Silvertips before the end of the game to round out the scoring. Silvertips 8 Royals 2.
