February 25, 2014, OTTAWA (ISN) – The University of Alberta Golden Bears are still the top-ranked team in CIS men’s hockey as they prepare for their first playoff series of 2014.

The Bears (25-2-1) top the media poll for the fourth straight week and for the 12th time this season after receiving 16 of 17 first-place votes – one more than last week – and 169 points from the national panel.

The reigning University Cup champion UNB Varsity Reds (24-3-1) were once again the only other team to earn first-place consideration and still sit comfortably in the second spot with 153 points.

The No. 3 Acadia Axemen (21-4-3), No. 4 Calgary Dinos (21-4-3), No. 5 Carleton Ravens (22-5-1 / 2-0 playoffs) No. 6 McGill Redmen (21-5-2 / 2-0) No. 7 UQTR Patriotes (22-6 / 2-0) and No. 8 Western Mustangs (21-6-1 / 2-1) also stay put in the 17th poll of the campaign.

The Moncton Aigles Bleus (17-11 / 2-0) move up one position to No. 9, while the Saskatchewan Huskies (17-10-1 / 1-2) drop one spot to No. 10, in a tie with the previously unranked Ryerson Rams (17-11 / 2-1).

The Big Four of Alberta, UNB, Acadia and Calgary enjoyed a bye last week in the first round of the playoffs and get back on the ice this week for conference semifinals.

In Canada West, the Golden Bears and Dinos will battle UBC and Manitoba, respectively, in best-of-three series (Friday-Sunday).

In the AUS, the V-Reds will face Saint Mary’s and the Axemen are set to square off against Moncton in best-of-five affairs, starting Wednesday night.

Carleton, McGill, UQTR and Moncton all opened post-season play with two-game sweeps, while Western and Ryerson needed three contests to advance.

Saskatchewan is the only Top-10 team that didn’t make it through the opening round, falling to UBC in three games. Fortunately for the Huskies, their season is not over as they will once again host the PotashCorp University Cup, presented by Co-op, from March 20 to 23 at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon.

Following is this week’s playoff schedule in CIS men’s hockey.

  • No. 1 Alberta vs. UBC: Best-of-3 Canada West semifinal (Feb. 28 – March 1)
