February 27, 2014, Edmonton, AB (ISN) – The Edmonton Oil Kings will kick off Saturday’s Battle of Alberta doubleheader with a bang, honouring a pair of Edmonton-area Olympic silver medallists.
Prior to the Oil Kings hosting the Calgary Hitmen Saturday, March 1 at 2:00 p.m., freestyle skier Mike Riddle and figure skater Kaetlyn Osmond will be on hand to take part in a ceremony recognizing their achievements at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Both athletes are Sherwood Park natives and will sign autographs for fans during an intermission. Riddle will also take part in a pre-game hotstove-style question and answer session with fans beginning at 1:30 p.m. Media are invited to attend.
Riddle won silver in the men’s halfpipe competition in Sochi, scoring 90.60 on his final run to slide into second spot. The 27-year-old is the 2011 FIS World Champion and 2013 World Cup Overall Champion and has been competing professionally for the past seven years.
Osmond, 18, won her silver medal in the figure skating team competition, helping Canada to a second-place finish with a pair of strong skates. A two-time national champion, Osmond ranked fifth in both the ladies free skate and the ladies long program in the team competition, scoring 62.54 and 110.73 points, respectively. In the women’s singles, Osmond racked up a 13th place finish with scores of 56.18 and 112.80.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for the festivities Saturday. Super fan Cameron Hughes will be in attendance to get a rowdy crowd fired up for a first-place battle with the Hitmen. Hughes has performed at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics, the U.S. Open tennis tournament and over 1,000 other sporting events, bringing arenas to their feet everywhere he goes.
Saturday will mark the first time ever the Oil Kings and Edmonton Oilers play in the same building on the same day, with the Oilers hosting the Calgary Flames that night at 8 p.m. Alumni from both the Oilers and Flames will be on hand to help celebrate one of the fiercest rivalries in sports as Al Hamilton, Dave Lumley and Paul Reinhart will take everyone back to the origins of the Battle of Alberta. The three will join Riddle for the pre-game hotstove and share with fans their experiences from the early days of this great rivalry.
