February 27, 2014, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team will head to the Lady Cougar Spring Invitational, located in San Marcos, Calif., March 1-2 for their second tournament of the spring season, looking to improve upon their previous tournament finish in San Diego.
The Vikes are coming off a 10th place finish in a field of 17 teams at the Super San Diego Women’s Golf Championships, their first tournament of the calendar year. Vike Michaela Abey led the Vikes in the tournament, shooting a second round score of 83, 11-over to finish the tournament in 18th place with a two-round total of 160, 16-over.
Joining Abey on the Vikes roster this weekend are captain Brynn Tomie, Emily Nicol, Laura Ferreira and Shannon Raina. Tomie, in her fourth year with the Vikes, was recently named to the roster for the World University Championships, being held in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
“With Brynn’s leadership skills and the respect she’s received from her teammates this season, she’s a great addition to the national team,” said Vikes interim head coach Justin Clews. “She and the team will definitely be prepared for this tournament.”
Clews will miss the Lady Cougar Invitational as he travels with the Vikes men to their tournament in Santa Clarita. In his absence, Clews has appointed Alison Quinlan to travel with the team to California. Quinlan’s involvement this season with the Vikes has focused on mental preparation, while the team also continues to receive swing and technical training from longtime coach David Rands.
“I know a lot of the girls have bought into Alison’s training,” said Clews. “The work of her mental training and David’s technical training will yield good results for us as we move forward this season.”
Competition at this year’s Lady Cougar Spring Invitational takes place Mar. 1-3. The men’s golf team will also be in action this weekend at The Master’s College Spring Invitational, located in Santa Clarita, Mar. 2-4. For more information please visit www.govikesgo.com
