February 27, 2014, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s and women’s rowing teams will host the 40th annual Elk Lake Regatta. Mar. 1-2, an event that features rowing clubs from across the West Coast.
Heading the regatta for the first time is men’s rowing head coach Aalbert Van Schothorst, who enters his first event as Vikes head coach after taking over for longtime coach Howard Campbell. Van Schothorst is no stranger to the regatta, however, having participated as a Vike rower himself and helping to host on various occasions.
“We’re hosting a regatta this weekend with the opportunity to showcase the Vikes capacity to bring the community together in a well established and respected racing event,” said Van Schothorst. “It’s also a good look at early season speed and show us where we have work to do.”
Both men’s and women’s crews will see action throughout the weekend as they prepare to launch into the spring portion of their seasons. The Vikes’ women will have to deal with the absence of head coach Rick Crawley for the weekend, who is eager to see how his crews fair despite him being unable to attend the event.
“I am looking for a good team effort both in running the event and racing well,” said Crawley. “I’m looking forward to the results across the board to see how we stack up and what we need to work on to get better. On the varsity side I will be interested in seeing how the pairs and fours go, the lightweight singles, double and of course the varsity eight. I hope to hear how everyone pulled together and raced hard as it is always a challenge to run an event and compete.”
On the men’s side, Van Schothorst and the Vikes will welcome the return of Canadian U-23 rowing members Sean Decter and Connor McGuigan for this weekend’s regatta, who have been absent from UVic’s rowing program due to training commitments with the national team.
The spring regatta will take place at Elk Lake, Mar. 1-2, beginning Saturday at 8:00 a.m. with event heats. Finals are set to begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday and admission is free for spectators. There will also be food vendors on site for spectators.
