March 1, 2014, Prince George (ISN) – On Saturday night, the Victoria Royals faced off against the Prince George Cougars at the CN Centre for the final test of a seven-game road trip. The Royals gave Patrik Polivka the start in net, while the Cougars countered with Ty Edmonds.
Victoria’s Austin Carroll earned a clear decision over Prince George’s Klarc Wilson when the two dropped the gloves just 39 seconds into the game for a tilt that spurred both benches. It was the Cougars that would open the scoring as Todd Fiddler struck for home team at the 8:52 mark of the first frame. Both teams exchanged powerplay opportunities late in the period, but neither was able to convert as both goalies stood tall to keep it a one-goal game. After 20 minutes of play, Prince George led 1-0.
The Royals tied the game at the 6:50 mark of the second frame. Jack Walker deflected the puck on goal from center ice before it took a fortunate bounce and eluded Edmonds’ blocker. Axel Blomqvist later put the Royals in front with his 22nd goal of the year at 12:34. Ben Walker hit Blomqvist with a great stretch pass that sent the Osby, Sweden native in on a breakaway. Blomqvist deked to his forehand and beat Edmonds over the right shoulder. Victoria then began to tighten up defensively and held the 2-1 advantage at the second intermission.
The Royals continued to play a strong defensive game throughout the third period as Prince George pressed for the equalizer. The Cougars came close to evening the score as they threw 10 shots Polivka’s way in the final frame and rung three more off the post, but the Royals’ sound play powered them to their 45th win of the year. With the victory, the Royals also clinched home ice advantage in the first round of the 2014 WHL Playoffs. Victoria 2 Prince George 1.
Victoria went 0/4= 0.0% on the powerplay, while Prince George went 0/3= 0.0%. The Cougars outshot the Royals 32-21.
Victoria finishes the season series with a 7-1-0-0 record versus Prince George and will now finally return home on March 7th after seven straight games on the road. Puck drop on March 7th is set for 7:05 p.m. at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre when the Royals host the Kamloops Blazers!
