March 4, 2014, SASKATOON, SK (ISN) – The Saskatoon Blades are pleased to announce that rookie centre Cameron Hebig has been named as the team’s Heinrichs Jewellery Player Of The Month for February.
The product of Saskatoon led the team in scoring in February, picking up 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points in 11 games. In those 11 games, there were only two instances where Hebig was held off the scoresheet.
Hebig is enjoying a great rookie WHL season this year for Saskatoon. Through 61 games he’s put up 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points to go along with 20 PIMs. His 24 points leave him 7th in team scoring, with his 12 goals leaving him 5th overall in that category on the team. His 24 points also leave him 27th overall in rookie scoring across the Western Hockey League.
The 5’10, 168 pound forward and former 3rd round pick of the Blades has also made a difference in the defensive end of the ice. His solid play in all zones has led to a promotion to the Blades top line, where he’s been matched up against the other team’s best players. He’s also been a fixture on the team’s powerplay and penalty killing units.
“Cameron Hebig,” said Blades head coach Dave Struch, when asked who deserved to be the player of the month for February. “He’s been a difference maker for us, especially here in this second half. It’s quite remarkable the things he’s been able to accomplish nightly for us as a rookie in this league.”
Hebig has enjoyed quite the second half for the Blades, with a big boost of confidence coming from his appearance at the World Under-17 Hockey Championships after Christmas. Hebig played for Team West at the event, was an alternate captain and was counted on to play key minutes in all situations. Since returning to Saskatoon after the event, he’s posted 10 goals and 19 points in 23 games with the Blades.
By taking home the honour, Hebig joins Nikita Scherbak (September/October), former-Blade Collin Valcourt (November), Chase Clayton (December) and Troy Trombley (January) as winners of the award so far during the 2013-14 season.
