Gentry Ford Classic preview

by Jonathan Hodgson

March 5, 2014 (ISN) – Vancouver Island Baseball Institute (VIBI) is back on the field this weekend as they participate in the Gentry Ford Classic at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon.

VIBI is coming off of a very successful Opening Weekend in Lynnwood, WA that saw them take two of three from the host Edmonds Community College and Mt. Hood CC.  The weekend was highlighted by an Opening Day sweep on Saturday, with a 4-0 shutout of Edmonds, and a 4-2 win over Mt. Hood.

The pitching staff was stellar in the doubleheader sweep, allowing 1 earned run in 18 innings, as 9th year head coach Jordan Blundell (Edmonton, AB) saw tremendous work from three arms that figure to be important members of the staff.

Connor Russell (Sr., Victoria, BC) earned the team’s first win of 2014, throwing 6 shutout innings, allowing just 5 hits and striking out 5 against Edmonds. Frank Kaluzniak (Jr., Brandon, MB) made 2 appearances, 1 start, throwing a combined 6 innings, allowing 1 earned run, earning the save in the game one win.  Finally, Austin Penner (Soph., Sherwood Park, AB) earned the game two win against Mt. Hood, throwing 5.1 shutout innings in relief, with 6 strikeouts.

Offensively, third baseman Gobind Sall (Fresh., Duncan, BC) was 3 for 3 in the opener, and had 4 hits on the weekend, scoring 3 runs.  Steve McKinnon (Fresh., Duncan, BC) drove in a pair of runs, while recording the game two save on the mound.

VIBI fell 10-2 on Sunday against Mt. Hood before rain cancelled the final game against Edmonds.
