Cougars win 3-2 over Storm

March 7, 2014, ESQUIMALT, B.C. (ISN) – Sam McMullen scored twice and Connor Beauchamp made 34 saves to lead the Victoria Cougars to a 3-2 win over the Campbell River Storm in the opening game of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League semifinals on Thursday.

The two teams battled to a scoreless opening 20 minutes before Victoria took a 2-1 advantage into the second intermission.

Blake Roney gave the Cougars a two-goal lead at the 4:20 mark of the third period before Brendan deVries, with his second marker of the game, cut the lead to one 65 seconds later.

An assists machine, Graham Zagrodney played a role in all three Victoria goals.

The Cougars went 2-for-3 on the power play; meanwhile, Campbell River went 0-for-3.

Jack Surgenor stopped 33 shots for the Storm.

Game 2 goes Friday, March 7 in Campbell River. Game time at the Rod Brind’Amour Arena, located at 225 South Dogwood Street, is 7:30 p.m.
