March 7, 2014, SASKATOON (ISN) – Pamela Ware of Beloeil, Que., won her first senior Canadian title on Friday upsetting Olympic medallist Jennifer Abel of Laval, Que., on women’s three-metre at the 2014 Winter Senior National Championships in diving.

Ware was steady in the final earning 344.25 points never receiving a mark below 7.0 from the judges on her five dives in the final. Abel’s day didn’t go so smoothly as she trailed most of the competition passing third place finisher Hailey Casper of Calgary on her final dive for 338.25.

The result was even more a surprise for Ware since she fractured her ankle six weeks ago which kept her off the boards for six weeks.

”It was a pretty emotional way to get that first Canadian title,” said Ware. ”I wasn’t even sure I was going to compete here. Despite some adjustments I was still able to make my dives. It was really hard for me to believe I won.”

Casper, first in the prelims, was also solid but her list doesn’t yet match Ware and Abel’s in difficulty. She finished at 336.00.

Abel, the Olympic bronze medallist on three-metre synchro with Emilie Heymans in 2012, won both the winter and summer national titles in 2013.

On men’s 10-metre tower, Maxim Bouchard of St-Constant, Que., took the title with 419.40 points to successfully defend his Winter Nationals title. Vincent Riendeau of Pointe-Claire, Que., was second at 415.30 and Tyler Roberge of Edmonton third at 403.15.

”I could have finished my dives better but overall I was happy to comeback with a strong final today,” said Bouchard. ”I executed the same list as last year but I’m working on new dives which I hope will be ready for this spring.”

In addition to national championship medals, the athletes are competing for inclusion on national teams that will represent Canada at various events on the 2014 FINA Grand Prix circuit, including the Canada Cup, May 1st to May 4th 2014, in Gatineau, Quebec.

The divers have a day off Saturday. Competition resumes Sunday at the Shaw Centre with the men’s three-metre and women’s 10-metre.
