March 9, 2014, SASKATOON (ISN) – Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal bounced from fourth spot in the preliminaries to win the gold medal in the women’s 10-metre final Sunday at the 2014 Winter Nationals diving competition.

Benfeito tabulated 374.10 points for the win with Roseline Filion of Laval, Que., second at 340.50 and Caeli McKay of Calgary third at 313.90.

”Prelims started a little rough, I didn’t compete as well as I could,” said Benfeito. ”I was able to relax in between the prelims and final and come back strong to get the win. In the final I was really happy with my back three and half which has given me a lot of trouble lately.”

On men’s three-metre, Riley McCormick of Victoria took the gold at 438.45 for his first career national title on the springboard. François Imbeau-Dulac of St-Lazare, Que., was second at 418.15 and Nicholas Beaupré of Montreal third at 406.95.

”It was pretty special to get that first title on springboard,” said McCormick a two time Olympian on 10-m tower. ”I’ve been diving really well this year especially in college so I had some momentum coming into this meet. It’s nice to see I’m progressing on three-metre after the transition from tower.”

In addition to national championship medals, the athletes were competing for inclusion on national teams that will represent Canada at various events on the 2014 FINA Grand Prix circuit, including the Canada Cup, May 1st to May 4th 2014, in Gatineau, Quebec.
