March 13, 2014, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes are pleased to announce the commitment of 18-year-old guard Sherrie Errico to the Vikes women’s basketball program for the 2014-15 varsity season.
Errico, a five-foot-seven product of North Vancouver, B.C. has experienced competition at the provincial level on several occasions and has earned multiple awards for her individual accomplishments on the court.
During her four-years at Windsor Secondary School, Errico has emerged as her school’s top athletic talent, having being named a First Team All-Star every year since grade nine as well as being named Windsor’s Most Valuable Player in grades nine, 10 and 11.
“I have been following the UVic basketball program for the past couple of years which has made me interested in playing for the Vikes,” explained Errico. “After watching Dani coach and getting to know her better I feel we will work well together. I have often been to Victoria and I feel it would be a nice place to go to university.”
Errico’s high school squad won regional titles in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The same team also qualified for the 2011, 2013 and 2014 BC AA provincials.
Errico has trained with the Vancouver-based 3D Basketball Academy since 2006 and played on the 3D Elite team from 2008-11 before returning to also play in 2013. The 3D Basketball Academy is well represented in the CIS as well as NCAA and CCAA levels.
In 2012, Errico was a member of B.C.’s U-16 provincial squad that captured the Western Canadian Championships title in Edmonton, Alta.
“Sherrie brings a lot to the table and I think her skills will transfer very nicely into our style of play at UVic,” said Vikes head coach Dani Sinclair. “She loves the game, is driven to keep improving, and has shown that she loves to compete under pressure.”
Originally inspired to play basketball from watching sister Michelle at a young age, Errico enrolled in the Steve Nash Basketball league in 2005 and has continued in the sport since.
This season, the high school senior averaged 34 points-per-game including a career high 40-point game against the Pitt Meadows Marauders.
Most recently, Errico was named tournament MVP at the 2014 AA BC Provincial Championships, where her Windsor team also captured the provincial title. Errico’s stats throughout the tournament were impressive, averaging 24 points, five rebounds along with three assists and three steals per-game.
“We are extremely proud and excited to welcome Sherrie into our program. She’s had a fabulous grade 12 year with her Windsor team, capturing the AA Provincial Championship and being named as the tournament MVP,” added Sinclair. “She has played a lot of basketball coming up through the 3D Basketball Academy and the B.C. provincial team program. Those experiences will help as she makes the jump into the CIS.”
Sinclair and the women’s basketball team will welcome Errico into the Vikes fold for the 2014-15 season.
