Royals tripped up by Giants

March 12, 2014, Vancouver (ISN) – On Wednesday night, the Victoria Royals faced-off with the Vancouver Giants in the two clubs’ 10th and final meeting of the regular season at Pacific Coliseum. The Royals gave Coleman Vollrath the start in net, while the Giants countered with Payton Lee.

The B.C. Division rivalry began with the majority of play inside Vancouver’s zone. The Royals earned an early powerplay and put the Giants under heavy pressure throughout the first period, but Lee turned aside every effort to keep the game scoreless as Victoria outshot Vancouver 21-4 by the end of the frame.

Steven Hodges opened the scoring for the Royals when he posted his 20th goal of the season just 1:13 into the second period. Logan Nelson feathered a pass to Hodges in the neutral zone before the Yellowknife, NWT product slid past two Giants and rifled a wrist shot off the crossbar and in. Vancouver then tied the game as Dalton Sward beat Vollrath at the 6:23 mark after a scramble behind the Royals’ net. The Giants’ Trent Lofthouse gave the hosts the lead at 15:39 when he tipped in a shot from the point on a powerplay. The two teams exchanged unsuccessful powerplay opportunities late in the period and Vancouver led 2-1 after 40 minutes.

Victoria controlled the play and pressed for the equalizer early in the third frame, but were again unable to beat a sharp Lee. At the 15:23 mark, Lofthouse picked up his second of the game to add to Vancouver’s lead on the powerplay once again. With 2:42 left in regulation, Austin Carroll made it a one-goal game with a powerplay goal of his own. Nelson let off a point shot that was initially stopped by the right pad of Lee, but the Scottsdale, AZ native found the rebound in the crease and slid the puck past the Vancouver netminder. Victoria was unable to claw back and force overtime as their six-game win streak came to a halt. Giants 3 Royals 2.

Victoria went 1/5=20.0% on the powerplay, while Vancouver went 2/3=66.7%. The Royals outshot the Giants 43-23.
