March 13, 2014, CALGARY, AB. (ISN) – Hormel Foods, the maker of STAGG® Chili, is proud to continue its commitment for the second consecutive year as an official sponsor of the Western Hockey League and founder of the SAVES for SUCCESS program. The program contributed $30,000 to minor hockey teams in Ontario and Western Canada.

Seventy teams went on-line to StaggChili.ca this year to submit a photo of teammates showing STAGG® Chili products in a fun and creative way. Team members, friends and family went on-line to vote for their team. Six teams in each division (Ontario and Western Canada) were awarded cash prizes to be used to fund team jerseys, ice time costs and other related minor hockey team expenses.

This year an additional voting method was established for the many players who already fuel their game with STAGG® Chili. Specially-marked cans of STAGG® Chili contained a unique PIN printed on the reverse side of the can’s label. Each PIN was worth one additional vote in the contest and can also be collected to use in next year’s program.

The winning Western Canadian teams this year were:

1st place: $5,000 – Surrey Penguins

Second through Fifth Place in each division: $2,000

2nd – Chilliwack Bruins

3rd – Langley A4 Eagles

4th – Rat River Saints

5th – Poco Raiders

Wildcard Draw (minimum 250 votes): $2,000 Nanaimo Pee Wee T2 Clippers

Larry Raskin, an International Brand Manager at Hormel says it’s a fitting partnership: “A favourite winter meal from the #1 brand of chili and the #1 winter sport in Canada. The SAVES for SUCCESS program allows us to contribute to hockey at the grass roots level in a way that is fun and allows STAGG® Chili to connect with families, communities and the game of hockey.”

“The WHL franchise in Western Canada are very pleased to partner with STAGG® Chili on the Saves for Success program,” commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “Anytime we can offer minor hockey teams throughout Western Canada the opportunity to reduce the costs of playing at the minor hockey level through a fun contest such as STAGG® Chili’s Save for Success program, this has a very positive impact on the game overall. Congratulations to the Surrey Penguins on winning the Stagg Chili Saves for Success grand prize.”
