Female Athlete of the Month – Stephanie Horner, Women’s swimming

University of Victoria Vike swimmer and two-time Olympian Stephanie Horner has been honoured with February’s Athlete of the Month after impressive showings at both the 2014 conference and national meets that saw her continuing to capture medals and first-place finishes despite an increased focus on completing her degree this season.

Horner’s medal finishes included gold in the Canada West women’s 200-metre butterfly after she posted a time of 2:13.31. Following the meet, Horner was named to the Canada West All-Star squad along with Vike teammate Keegan Zanatta. Horner then headed to Toronto to compete in the 2014 CIS National Championships, where she earned a bronze medal in the 200-metre butterfly, one of four Vikes medals over the weekend earned by her, Zanatta and Jon McKay.

Male Athlete of the Month – Jon McKay, Men’s swimming

First-year Vike Jon McKay was honoured as the Original Joe’s Athlete of the Month for men for the month of February. McKay had an impressive month in the pool, swimming to a silver medal finish to cap off the CIS National Championships for the Vikes. McKay’s silver medal-winning 1500-metre race saw him drop 15 seconds off his previous race time, posting a time of 15:11.00. McKay’s race time brought the Vikes medal total to four on the weekend.

Prior to the nationals, McKay posted three CIS qualifying times at the Canada West championships that included qualifying times in the men’s 200-metre butterfly, 400-metre freestyle and 1500-metre freestyle. In just his first year with the Vikes, McKay has become one of the top swimmers on the men’s side to watch.
