Stefen Romero hits walk-off home run in 6-4 Mariners win

March 23, 2014, PEORIA, Ariz. (ISN) – Stefen Romero hit a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the 9th inning to lead the Mariners to a 6-4 win over the Oakland Athletics Sunday afternoon in Cactus League play.

Seattle trailed 4-2 entering its last at-bat before staging the comeback win. Tyler Smith started the rally with a leadoff single and moved to third on a single by Justin Smoak. Kyle Seager followed with a double off the right field wall to cut the lead to 4-3 and Romero then deposited a 2-2 pitch onto the left field berm for his third spring homer.

The Mariners snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 16-9-3 in Cactus League play with five games remaining before the start of the 2014 regular season March 31 at Los Angeles Angels.

The Athletics hit three home runs to account for all their scoring in the loss, with Josh Donaldson (2-run HR, 4th inning), Derek Norris (solo HR, 6th inning) and Yoenis Céspedes (solo HR, 8th inning) all hitting longballs.

The A’s struck first with two runs in the top of the 4th inning, with third baseman Josh Donaldson hitting a 2-run home run off Mariners starter Randy Wolf. Wolf cruised through the first three innings allowing only one hit, but gave up a pair of walks and the home run in the 4th inning.

After being held hitless for the first 4.2 innings, Logan Morrison doubled off A’s starter Josh Lindblom with two outs in the 5th inning. Dustin Ackley followed with a 2-run home run to left field to tie the game 2-2, his second spring homer.

Norris broke the 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the 6th inning and Céspedes extended the lead with a solo home run off Yoervis Medina in the top of the 8th inning.

Wolf recorded a no-decision allowing 6 hits and 3 runs in 6.0 innings. Fernando Rodney worked a scoreless 7th inning and Lucas Luetge (2-0) earned the win with a perfect top half of the 9th inning (2 strikeouts).

The Mariners (16-9-3) return to Cactus League action tomorrow with a home game vs. the Chicago White Sox (1:05 pm). The game will be broadcasted live on Mariners.com and delayed until 7 pm  on 710 ESPN Seattle. Right-hander Blake Beavan (2-1, 4.91) will start vs. White Sox right-hander Erik Johnson (0-1, 7.36)
