March 24, 2014, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes women’s golf team finished their opening round of the Battle at Primm tournament, shooting a team score of 329 that places them in fourth overall out of 11 teams heading into Tuesday’s second and final round of play. Laura Ferreira led the Vikes with a 9-over, 81 first round of play.

Vikes Michaela Abey and Emily Nicol both carded rounds of 82, while teammates Shannon Raina and Brynn Tomie put together rounds of 84 and 86, respectively. CSU San Marcos’ Vanessa Chap led all players Monday with a 1-over, 73 round, while the Northwood Seahawks finished as the top team with a team total 307.

Clear skies and calm winds greeted the field of teams who played in optimal conditions through the opening nine holes of play before increased wind picked up in the back nine holes of play.

“I’m happy that Laura played well today,” said Vikes interim head coach Justin Clews. “ The wind will continue in tomorrow’s round so I think the course is going to play a little tougher. ”

The women’s second and final round of the Battle at Primm begins at 8:30 a.m. at Primm Valley Golf Course.
