March 27, 2014, Edmonton (ISN) – Edmonton will host hundreds of youth futsal players this weekend as the 2014 Alberta Soccer Servus Credit Union Futsal Provincial Championships are set to take place from March 28-30 at the Garrison Military Fitness Centre.
Youth players from across the province will compete in two different age categories at different tier levels: U12 and U14 – Tiers I and II.
This is the second year running for a Provincial Competition for Futsal, a form of soccer that has been extremely popular around the rest of the world for years and gaining in popularity and importance in Alberta. Futsal is played on a small sized artificial surface, without boards and with a weighted ball that differs from a regular soccer ball. Futsal is the form of indoor soccer that international governing body FIFA has embraced and encouraged and has been widely credited for helping to develop star international players like Lionel Messi.
24 male and female teams from across the province will participate in this weekend’s championships in U-12 and U-14 age categories. Media interested in the Championships are invited to the Garrison Military Fitness Centre to cover the competition. When entering the facility, please ask for an Alberta Soccer representative.
