March 27, 2014 (ISN) – Glasgow 2014 today unveiled the dress which will be worn at more than 250 medal ceremonies at the Commonwealth Games.
The medal bearer’s dress has been created by Glasgow native Kerry Nixon, using the official Glasgow 2014 tartan, and is designed to reflect the youthful nature of the Games and to pay homage to Glasgow’s vibrant art and fashion scene, according to organisers.
The tartan design was printed onto the fabric for the dresses by The Centre for Advanced Textiles at The Glasgow School of Art.
The female medal bearer’s role includes leading procession members to the podium and carrying the medals awarded to the athletes, which will be watched by an estimated TV audience of more than one billion.
“Glasgow 2014 has been fortunate to work with Kerry Nixon, a globally acclaimed designer, on the design of the dresses to be worn by our female medal bearers,” said Glasgow 2014 chief executive David Grevemberg.
“Kerry’s creation is everything we could have wanted – stylish, contemporary and fun.
“Her use of the official Glasgow 2014 tartan and collaboration with the Scottish textile industry is admirable and consistent with our desire to showcase Scottish style and creativity.”
Nixon first came to international attention following the launch of the “Vidler & Nixon” winter collection in 2006 which went on to gain global acclaim for unique and innovative tailoring and was stocked by prestigious international retailers.
In 2011 she branched out into a career as a stylist and has worked with several high profile actresses since.
She will also be responsible for styling the male medal bearers for the Games.
“I’m delighted to be a part of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games,” said Nixon.
“It’s a huge honour for me to design and now showcase the medal bearer’s dress and represent my hometown of Glasgow at such an exciting time for the city.”
The medal bearer’s dress is being modelled by 2007 Scottish Model of the Year Brigid McGaw and the images of the dress have been captured by renowned celebrity photographer Nicole Nodland.
