March 28, 2014, VANCOUVER (ISN) – The UBC Thunderbirds men’s soccer team won the Keg Spring Cup on Sunday, defeating the host Victoria Vikes 3-0 in the championship final.
The T-Birds were up 2-0 at halftime on goals from Sean Einarsson and Navid Mashinchi. UBC forward Niall Cousens was the only player to find the net in the second half.
“We had several strong performances from most of our players this past weekend,” remarked UBC head coach Mike Mosher. “In fact, there were so many good performances through the weekend it would be wrong to single out only one or two guys.”
The Thunderbirds advanced to final by recording a 5-0 shutout of the Trinity Western Spartans on Saturday.
Cousens, Mashinchi and Einarsson all scored for UBC, as did Otis Sandhu and Cameron Davis.
The T-Birds have scored 11 goals without giving one up in three matches so far this spring, which also includes a 3-0 shutout over Simon Fraser.
“I have appreciated the attitude, intensity and competitiveness the guys have brought to these spring games thus far,” said Mosher. “This will be needed and then some when we take on a strong opponent in FC Edmonton this coming Saturday.”
UBC will return home for a Saturday match against FC Edmonton of the professional North American Soccer League. Kickoff at Thunderbird Stadium is at 11:30 a.m. FC Edmonton are in the midst of their preseason and have recorded three victories, including wins over Simon Fraser and Trinity Western.
