Mariners end spring training witn 2-1 loss at Colorado

March 29, 2014, SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (ISN) – The Seattle Mariners closed out spring training play with a 2-1 loss against the Colorado Rockies Saturday afternoon at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

Seattle finished Cactus League play with a 18-12-3 record and opens the 2014 season Monday at the Los Angeles Angels.

Mariners starting pitcher Chris Young fired 4.2 scoreless innings, allowing 4 hits and strikeout out 2 while throwing 63 pitches (44 strikes). Left-handed reliever Joe Beimel (0-1) was saddled with the loss allowing one run in his only inning of work.

The Mariners jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a single by Kyle Seager in the top of the 2nd inning. A pair of leadoff walks to Justin Smoak and Stefen Romero set up the run-scoring single by Seager.

Colorado tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning on a single by minor league infielder Cesar Galvez. A two-out RBI single by Brandon Barnes in the bottom of the 7th inning scored Drew Stubbs with the go-ahead run.

The Mariners open the 2014 season Monday night (7:05 pm) vs. the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim. RHP Felix Hernandez will make his 7th career Opening Day start against Angels right-hander Jered Weaver. The game will be televised on ROOT SPORTS (Dave Sims and Mike Blowers) and ESPN2 (Jon Sciambi, Doug Glanville, Jessica Mendoza), and broadcast on 710 ESPN Seattle (Rick Rizzs and Aaron Goldsmith) and the Mariners Radio Network.
