March 28, 2014, KELOWNA, BC (ISN) – Claire Paterson has added another recruit to the Heat’s 2014 roster, as Emma Nelsen has committed to play for UBC Okanagan next season.

Nelsen, a Vancouver native, has been playing for Mountain United FC in the BC Soccer Premier League for the past two seasons – the same program from which Paterson recruited Devon Fleming-Frame last season. It was during this time that Nelsen first caught Paterson’s eye, and now she will be playing for her as the Heat’s latest recruit.

“Emma is a very technically-sound athlete who is calm on the ball and has good vision,” explains Paterson. “She comes from a strong club, and I’m very excited that she has decided to join our team.”

Playing centre midfielder, Nelsen has the ability to make plays both offensively and defensively in the middle of the pitch – an aspect of the game that the Heat need to improve on with the move from the CCAA (Canadian Collegiate Athletics Association) to the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport).

“I love to read the game and find plays before the ball reaches my foot,” explains Nelsen. “I like to think I show determination throughout all games and show leadership through communication on the field.”

Nelsen, who will graduate from Handsworth Secondary this spring, is also an incredibly smart player with the football – and is another major reason why Paterson nabbed her for the upcoming season. It seems her mid-80s average in her final year of high school has translated well onto the pitch, and she will get the opportunity to continue both her strong academic and athletic achievements at UBC Okanagan in 2014.

Emma will be pursuing a degree in Management, which was a major reason why she chose to come to UBC Okanagan among other things.

“I get the chance to play soccer, be close to home, and pursue a degree that I’m interested in all while living in Kelowna,” explains Nelsen. “I’m very excited to play for the Heat next year!”

Emma joins Susan Traynor as Claire Paterson’s first two recruits so far this season. Both freshmen will be on the Okanagan campus, one that Emma fell in love with during her visit earlier in the year, this summer for training camp.

The Heat will play in the Canada West soccer league this fall for the first time, the schedule will be announced in the middle of June and will be posted on Check back for more details.
