April 2, 2014 (ISN) – Volleyball Canada has selected the male and female beach volleyball teams that will represent Canada at the FISU 2014 World University Championships held in Porto, Portugal, July 23 to July 27, 2014.
The men’s team of Liam Kopp (St. Catharines, ON) of McMaster University and Sven Trodel (Sudbury, ON) of York University defeated Greg Simone (London, ON) and Gabriel Burlacu (Windsor, ON, both of the University of Windsor, to earn the berth. Result: 17-21, 23-21, 15-13.
“I think we really stepped up our game and left it all on the court during this past tryout tournament,” said Kopp. “I am honoured to have the chance to represent McMaster University and Canada at this upcoming FISU tournament.”
Trodel said: “I’ve been training hard so it’s nice to have something to show for it.”
The third-place team was William Hoey (Brampton,ON) and Mateusz Golas (Bolton, ON), both of Queen’s University.
University of Alberta’s Krista Zubick (St. Albert, AB) and Jaki Ellis (Mississauga, ON) took the top women’s spot, beating Charlotte Sider (Ottawa, ON) of the University of Toronto and Ali Woolley (Toronto, ON) of the University of Calgary, in two sets, 21-16, 21-13.
“We’re really excited to represent Canada and the University of Alberta at the FISU World University Championship this summer,” said Ellis. “It is an amazing opportunity for us as we both had the pleasure of representing Canada with the Indoor National team at the 2011 FISU games in Shenzhen, China. The qualification tournament was a great experience for us to learn and develop as partnership on the beach. We look forward to continuing our training and competing at the tournament in Portugal!”
Rachel Marcus (Toronto, ON) of the University of Toronto and Aleks Arsovic (Burlington, ON) of York University ended up in third place.
The selection tournament was held at Volleyball Canada’s national beach training centre in Toronto.
