April 2, 2014, VICTORIA (ISN) – With the 2013-14 CDI Premier League season winding down, the University of Victoria Vikes men’s rugby team return to Wallace Field on April 5 to face the UBCOB Ravens with an opportunity to finish their season on a high note.
The Vikes (5-6) currently occupy the sixth spot in league standings with 26 points. Over 11 games of the season the UVic squad has put up 295 points while allowing 304 against. Second-year Vike Fergus Hall has led his team on offence when healthy, putting up a team-high 75 points in seven games played that also places him second overall in league scoring.
The Ravens (5-7) sit two points up on the Vikes in fifth-place overall, with Cameron Johnson leading a balanced group on offence with 31 points in eight games of play. Also contributing on offence have been the duo of Alex O’Donnell and Shane O’Hallahan with 25 and 20 points, respectively. The Vikes will have to limit their number of unforced errors in Saturday’s match, as Cameron’s team-leading point total has come strictly off penalty kicks (5) and conversions (8).
The Vikes roster Saturday will feature a heavy injection of young talent, as several of the Vikes U-20 players will be unavailable for the contest, including Canadian University Sevens Tournament MVP James Pitblado. Pitblado, along with Vikes Joseph Erlic, Nathan Yanagiya and Macbryan Bos will be participating in the 2014 IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in Hong Kong, China, April. 7-19.
The Ravens and Vikes last met Nov. 16 at Jericho Park, where Pitblado, Luke Campbel, Nathan Stewart and Fergus Hall all posted scores in a close 22-18 victory. The two teams clash again this weekend, 2:45 p.m., April 1 at the University of Victoria’s Wallace Field.
