April 3, 2014, Montreal (ISN) – Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) took on American Venus Williams for the second time on Thursday as she was trying to reach her third quarter-final of the season at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina.
Bouchard fell in three sets the first time around against the former World No. 1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion in the Tokyo quarter-finals last year, but was able turn the tables the second time of asking in another tightly contested match 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-4 in 2 hours, 15 minutes. The 20-year-old Canadian won the opening set after saving two set points down 4-6 in the tiebreak.
Williams was dominant off the ground in the second set and early in the third as she found herself up a break at 2-1. Bouchard won five of the final seven games of the match to earn her 15th victory of the season and reach the final eight in Charleston for the second consecutive year.
Seeded sixth in the tournament, Bouchard will face the winner of tonight’s third round match between Croat Alja Tomljanovic and Serbian Jelena Jankovic. Bouchard and Jankovic faced off in the final eight of the Family Circle Cup in 2013.
