April 6, 2014, VICTORIA (ISN) – The University of Victoria Vikes men’s rugby squad returned to Wallace Field, April 5, facing the UBCOB Ravens in a tightly contested match. The Ravens would eventually outlast the home squad, defeating Victoria 29-24.
Vike Kane Wyatt led his squad with two tries on Saturday afternoon while Pat Kay posted a try and two converts. Dave Morgan added the fourth scoring play of the afternoon for Victoria, who fall to 5-7 on the season, while the Ravens record moves to 6-7 as they fight to make the playoffs.
“I think we played pretty well today,” said Vikes head coach Doug Tate. “They are in the playoff hunt, they came out firing and I thought we played real well.”
Penalties were the difference in Saturday’s loss, with Ravens kicker Cameron Johnson converting on several opportunities to put his side up in the match. Throughout the game, the Vikes were unable to convert on several of their own chances. A late Vikes try would not be enough as they would fall just shy of a comeback. Despite the loss, the Vikes managed to earn two bonus points.
The Vikes close out their season at Wallace Field against the Rowers (5-8), April 12 at Wallace Field. The Rowers currently sit two points back of the Vikes with 23 points on the season. Both teams will be looking to end two-game losing skids and finish off their 2013-14 campaign on a positive note. Kick-off for the season finale is set for 2:45 p.m.
