April 5 ISN -The University of Victoria Vikes varsity women had an impressive debut at the San
Diego Crew Classic, April 5, winning their heat in a time of 6:59.72 over Kansas
State and California State U-Sacramento.
UBC won heat 2 over Iowa and St Mary’s
setting up a potential Brown Cup rematch in the final tomorrow.
“The girls had a very aggressive race plan today and executed it well,” said Vikes
head coach Rick Crawley, “It was a tight race with KSU up until our first big move.
The girls went at the 750 mark they put distance between themselves and KSU and
never looked back.”
It was a wire-to-wire win for the Vikes, who won comfortably by a length of open water.
“UBC had a tighter race and hence had to go a little faster as they were pushed in
their race,” explained Crawley. “They opened it up in the second half setting up the
rematch tomorrow. We will not underestimate any of the other crews however as
potentially anyone is dangerous if they have a good race.”

Heat 2: UBC 6:57.98, Iowa 7:02.40, St Mary’s 7:03.75
Victoria’s varsity four were unable to match their teammates finish, placing seventh
“This is likely the youngest and least experienced crew in the four event featuring
three of our top novices,” said Crawley. “They have had a very successful novice
year and this was an eye opening experience for them.”
The young Vikes finished last and out of the racing, but had an upbeat outlook on
the experience. “We will take home some hard lessons from this,” said coxswain
Cassidy Fernandes. “Next time we come down these girls will be a lot faster and
better prepared as a result of being here and racing.”
