Niagara Knights Coaches Recruited to Team Canada

Two Niagara College volleyball coaches will be spending the summer with Canada’s national volleyball teams in preparation for the Pan-Am Cup in June.

Joey Martin, head coach of the Niagara Knight women’s volleyball team, will serve as an assistant coach on the national women’s program, and Nathan Groenveld, head coach of the men’s volleyball team, will serve as assistant coach for the men’s national ‘B’ team.

“As a coach, being a part of the Canadian women’s senior program is something I’ve been striving towards” said coach Joey Martins. “This is going to be a great learning experience for me and I’m really looking forward to seeing and learning from the ways head coach Arnd Ludwig teaches, speaks and conducts himself with his players.”
Martins has served as head coach of the Niagara College women’s volleyball program since 2011; since then he’s been named OCAA West Division Coach of the Year and they’ve twice qualified for OCAA playoffs.
As an outside hitter for the Loyalist Lancers and the legendary Red Deer Kings, Martins was a four-time CCAA All-Canadian, a two-time CCAA Player of the Year, and a two-time CCAA Athlete of the Year Across All Sports. He represented Canada at the FISU games in 2005, and was later named to the senior men’s national team.
Nathan Groenveld has served as a head coach since the 2010; the Knights claimed the 2013 OCCAA West Division title, fifth place at the 2013 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship, as well as two CCAA All-Canadian awards and a CCAA Academic All-Canadian award.
Groenveld is a former member of the men’s National ‘A’ program, competing from 2007-2010. He competed at FISU, NORCECA, and professionally in Qatar.
“I am extremely honored to be a part of a great staff this summer and I look forward to helping in the development of these high-level athletes” said Groenveld. “It’s an opportunity to work with some of the best volleyball players in the world, and to interact with some of the best coaches. I’m looking forward to getting to work.”

The CCAA is a national sport organization that enriches the lives of student-athletes through intercollegiate competition.
