FORT MYERS, Fla. – Olympic bronze medallist Richard Weinberger of Victoria took the silver on Saturday in the men’s 10-kilometre race at the Fran Crippen Cup open water swimming competition.
The competition was also a Canadian selection for the open water team at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships set for Aug. 21-24 in Gold Coast, Australia.
Alexander Meyer of the U.S. won the gold medal Saturday clocking one hour, 52 minutes and 47.39 seconds. Weinberger followed in 1:53:22.60 and Andreas Waschburger of Germany was third in 1:53:30.77.
Weinberger led most of the way but could never build a comfortable gap on his closest pursuers. While a bit frustrated Weinberger credited Meyer’s kick and strategy.
“It’s not just the speed and strengths, but the smarts, too,” he said about Meyer. “He knows there’s one side I like to breathe on so he gets on the other side so I can’t see him.”
Meyer said he had mini plans throughout the race and caught up to the leader in stages.
“I swam up to Andreas with five minutes to go and then I pulled up to Richard on the side. I could feel Andreas on my feet.”
Eric Hedlin of Victoria, a silver medallist in the five-kilometre at the FINA World Championships last year, was fourth in 1:53:38.33 and Philippe Guertin of St-Hubert, Que., fifth in 1:54:25.47. Hedlin and Guertin earned the two other Pan Pac open water spots for the men.
Aimeson King of Victoria was 10th out of 30 entries.
It was an American sweep in the women’s 10-kilometre with Ashley Twichell first in 2:04:23.65, Christine Jennings second in 2:04:24.11 and Emily Brunemann third in 2:04:24.53.
Jade Dusablon of Quebec City was the top Canadian in fourth in 2:04:26.77. Zsofi Balazs of Toronto was sixth in 2:06:03.44, Léonie Pamerleau of Quebec City seventh and Heather Maitland of Toronto was 11th. Dusablon, Pamerleau and Maitland were nominated to the Pan Pac team.
Marc-André Pelletier of Quebec City was named the Canadian team’s open water swim coach for the Pan Pacs.
