April 13, 2014, NELSON, B.C. (ISN) – It was vintage Victoria Cougars hockey. Jake Stolz had a goal and an assist and Connor Beauchamp stopped all 23 shots he faced as Victoria beat the Nelson Leafs 3-0 in the bronze medal game Sunday.

Also scoring for the Cougars, who were making their third consecutive Cyclone Taylor Cup appearance, were Sam McMullen and Robert Zadra.

Beauchamp was sensational in recording his 11th shutout of the season. The Nanton, Alberta native was especially good in the second period when he robbed Nolan Percival from in close. Then off the ensuing faceoff, Beauchamp absorbed a point shot taken by Kyle Clayton.

The score was 1-0 up to that point.

Stolz, who was a defensive stalwart the entire tournament, opened the scoring with less than a minute to play in the first period. From the right faceoff circle, Stolz wired a slap shot which found its way in between the pads of goaltender Brad Rebagliati.

Victoria again found the back of the net in the last minute of play, this time coming in the middle frame.

19 seconds after an unsuccessful power play, McMullen buried a great centering pass from Blake Roney for his third goal of the tournament. Picking up the second assist was Stolz.

Zadra, whose unassisted goal, put the game out of reach when his innocent dump in at the 6:34 mark of the third period took a strange bounce before deflecting off Rebagliati and into the net. The goal came with Patrick Webb in the penalty box.

Rebagliati made 40 saves in the loss.

Both teams went 0-for on the power play. The Cougars went 0-for-3; meanwhile, Nelson went 0-for-4.

In its 16-year history, Victoria has won one gold medal, two silver medals, and two bronze medals at the Cyclone Taylor Cup. They qualified in 2007-08 but did not bring home a medal.

On behalf of the Cougars, everyone in the organization would like to wish Beauchamp, Roney, Garett Kemmler, David Marshall, Mark Walton, and Graham Zagrodney all the best in their future endeavors. All six players are 20-years-old and in their final year of junior eligibility.

Walton graduates as the Cougars 2013-14 captain.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS:
