Swimming well represented in Quebec sport nominations


MONTREAL – Andre Despatie received great new on National Officials Day on Wednesday as he was nominated for two awards for the Gala Sports Quebec – the province’s annual sport awards to be held April 30 in Laval.

Despatie, from St-Jerome, is a finalist for the top official award at the provincial and national level and for the volunteer award at the national level.

Three other awards have swimming finalists as well.

The 2013 Age Group Swimming Nationals held from July 24-30, 2013 at Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal is a finalist for the top Canadian event.

The age group nationals, which attracted more than 900 swimmers from 159 clubs, is up against the 2013 Canada Games which were held in Sherbrooke and the Canada Cup mountain bike event.

Two individual swimmers, Emil Goin of Cote-St-Luc, and Allyson Kis of Pointe-Claire, were nominated for the male and female athlete of the year at the provincial level. In the past year. Goin has lowered the 13-14 Canadian age group record in the 13-14 100-m butterfly in both short and long course; Kis helped her Pointe-Claire club to the national 11-12 mark in the 4X50-m freestyle relay short course in 2013.

In all there are 57 finalists in 18 categories.
