UFC returns to Vancouver


April 17, 2014, Toronto, Ontario (ISN) – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) organization makes its long-awaited return to Vancouver.

The world’s No.5-ranked pound-for-pound mixed martial artist, UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, faces Russian contender Ali Bagautinov at Rogers Arena on Saturday, June 14. The UFC announced today that tickets for this five-round championship bout go on sale to the general public on Saturday, April 26 at 10 a.m. PST.

At 27 years old, Johnson (19-2-1, fighting out of Parkland, Washington) is one of the fastest and most technically sound fighters on the planet. Making his fifthtitle defense, he is the first flyweight champion in UFC history and is currently riding a six-fight unbeaten streak (5-0-1).

Meanwhile, Bagautinov (13-2, fighting out of Dagestan Republic, Russia) is undefeated in his UFC tenure after earning impressive wins against Marcos Vinicius, Tim Elliott, and John Lineker en route to his flyweight title shot. The 28-year-old has recorded 11 straight wins since 2011, finishing seven of his opponents in the process.

In addition to the flyweight title bout, two top-ranked welterweights will battle for title contention in Vancouver when the division’s second-ranked competitor and Quesnel, B.C.-born Rory MacDonald (16-2, fighting out of Montreal) meets the explosive Tyron Woodley (13-2, fighting out of St. Louis, Missouri), who’s the fourth-ranked UFC welterweight.

Other bouts for UFC 174include:

  • Vancouver’s Kajan Johnson (19-10-1) vs. lightweight Tae Hyun Bang (16-8).
  • Montreal bantamweight Yves Jabouin (19-9) vs. stand up specialist Mike Easton (13-4).
  • Winnipeg’s Roland Delorme (9-2, 1 NC) vs. Japanese bantamweight Michinori Tanaka (9-0).
  • Japan’s Kiichi Kunimoto (16-5-2, 1 NC) vs. Brazilian welterweight Daniel Sarafian (9-4).

Note — Johnson, Bagautinov, MacDonald and Woodley will join UFC Managing Director Tom Wright at a pressconference at Rogers Arena on Tuesday, April 22 at 2 p.m. PST. Tickets for UFC® 174: JOHNSON vs. BAGAUTINOV go on sale Saturday, April 26 at 10 a.m. PST and are priced at $375, $250, $150, $100, $75 and $50, not including applicable service charges. UFC® 174: JOHNSON vs. BAGAUTINOV will be available live on Pay-Per-View on June 14 at 10 p.m. EST/7 p.m. PST on UFC.TV®, iN DEMAND, DirecTV, DISH Network, Avail-TVN, and in Canada on Shaw Communications, Bell TV, Sasktel, Viewer’s Choice Canada and Indigo (French) for a suggested retail price of $44.99 US/$49.99 CAN for Standard Definition and $54.99 US/$59.99 CAN for High Definition.

The UFC has visited Vancouver on two previous occasions with UFC® 115: LIDDELL vs. FRANKLIN in June 2010 and UFC® 131: DOS SANTOS vs. CARWIN in June 2011.

The UFC’s Vancouver visit is one of five live Canadian events for the organization in2014. Other events for the calendar year include UFC Fight NightTM events in Quebec City (April 16) and Halifax (October 4) and global PPV stops in Toronto (September 27) and Montreal (December 6).

Since 2008, the UFC has hosted 15 events in Canada with each experiencing tremendous success. Collectively, the 15 events have seen almost 300,000 fans in attendance and millions worldwide watching on Pay-Per-View. The six host cities to date – Calgary, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Quebec City – have had a cumulative gross gate of close to $60M and millions more in economic impact. UFC events have set single-day event gate records in four Canadian venues: Calgary’s Scotiabank Saddledome (UFC 149), Montreal’s Bell Centre (UFC 124), Toronto’s Rogers Centre (UFC 129) and Winnipeg’s MTS Centre (UFC 161).
