April 23, 2014, Dover, Del. (ISN) – Hosting its lone meet of the season, the Delaware State track & field program turned in superb performances Tuesday afternoon in the DSU Invitational with the women coming out on top out with 189 points, while the men took second (112.50 points) behind crosstown foe Wesley College (146 points).
On the women’s side, DSU shined in the field events, led by Janae Wilson (18-11.25 – 5.77m) winning the Long Jump and Maria Gwengi (43-11.75 – 13.40m) coming out on top in the Shot Put. In addition, Morgan Durham took first in the Javelin with a mark of 114.0 (34.76m).
Meanwhile, Rayanna Relerford won the 400-Meter Dash with a time of 56.71, as Shi’erra Hilliard took third (58.53) in the same event. Also, Shalaya Sydney placed second (14.89) in the 100-Meter Hurdles, while Taylor Addison finished third (12.87) in the 100-Meter Dash.
On the other hand, four Hornets on the men’s side finished in the top five in the 400-Meter Dash with Stephen Bowe winning the event with a time of 48.84, followed by Bryan Pointer finishing second (48.88).
Headlining the top performances in the field events for DSU was Michael Cummings winning (6.00 – 1.83m) the High Jump, while the Hornets won (3:16.68) the 4×400-Meter and took second (42.44) in the 4×100-Meter Relay events.
Lastly, Sharad Mackey crossed the finish line at 21.85 to place second behind Coppin State’s Rosen Daniel in the 200-Meter Dash, whereas Gary Melton came in third (11.03) in the 100-Meter Dash.
Coming up next for the Hornets will be the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. this Friday and Saturday, along witht the Delaware Classic, hosted by the University of Delaware (Saturday).
