Sixty six teams, some competing for the right to compete in the National Championships being held this summer in Kingston, Ontario, slapped on the pads, gloves and shin protectors and started their quest to become the Victoria regions best street hockey team in their respective divisions. Winners from the competitive division in each of the 21 different regions set across Canada will playoff for the coveted Redwood Cup on national television this August.

HNIC’s Play On! celebrates the game of hockey and Canada’s culture in a fun atmosphere that makes children feel like pros and adults like kids again. In Victoria, adult registration would perhaps indicate that more Vancouver Island adults are looking for their past memories rather than children living them. A trend that was pointed out by Commissioner Scott Hill. “There are definitely more adults playing (at this tournament), than other parts of the country, but I think that will change as this tournament becomes more well known here.”

Day one competition was highlighted by a noon time game pitting local politicians, media hosts, athletes, and Marty the Marmot against each other in a fun game that saw little in the way of goal tending in as fans were entertained by the back and forth antics of the players.
