April 27, 2014, Victoria (ISN) – Former Victoria Cougars goaltender Connor Beauchamp has committed to Minot State University for the 2014-15 season.
“I would like to thank the Cougars organization for a fantastic final year of my junior hockey career,” Beauchamp said. “I would also like to thank my teammates, coaching staff, and trainers for all their hard work, dedication, and sacrifices during the year.”
Beauchamp is coming off a spectacular season in which he posted 23 wins, a goals against average of 1.77, a save percentage of .917, and nine shutouts during the regular season. The Nanton, Alberta, native then tallied seven more playoff wins including another goose egg to help lead Victoria to its third straight Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League championship.
In need of a puck stopper, Cougars head coach Mark Van Helvoirt acquired Beauchamp after pulling the trigger with the Castlegar Rebels of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League in an offseason deal.
Entering the season, Beauchamp had two specific goals. First, it was to win a VIJHL championship and second, it was to secure a scholarship at an elite university.
“I am very pleased that Connor was able to reach both of his goals,” Van Helvoirt said. “Connor’s success is not by coincidence as he continually showed up to the rink each day with a great attitude and strong desire to learn.”
And according to the 20-year-old netminder, he felt that the Cougars program of excellence was first class and it pushed him to become better not just on the ice but off the ice as well.
“Coming to Victoria for my final year of junior eligibility was one of the best decisions I could have made as I feel that this program has helped me mature into a college level player,” Beauchamp said. “I am excited for this opportunity to play for the MSU Beavers and will be forever grateful to everyone who was part of this past season.”
Van Helvoirt would like to thank Beauchamp for all his contributions and would like to wish him the best of luck at MSU.
Based in Minot, North Dakota, MSU is located 2,181 kilometres east of Victoria.
